Holiday Home to Rent - The Old Admirals Mansion, Agios Antonis / 4 Corners
€ 1,400.00 per week (high season)
150 m2 :: 2 Bedrooms
One of the grandest and most charming houses on Hydra!
The Old Admirals House is a statement of the days gone by with large open rooms with very high ceilings contrasting with delicate plaster wall mouldings. This house oozes the grandeur of the time it was built, over 250 years ago when the Admiral held his command and his ships docked in Hydra's harbour.
One enters the grounds through a very understated door down a narrow alley. Through this door and up four steps brings you to a sun drenched vine covered terrace with seating and table for five or more ideal for al fresco dining.
The door into the house nestles within an arch and opens into a casual and unusual seating/eating area. Your eye will be drawn to the Sterna (covered well) and the interesting and mismatched cupboards and shelves. the room appears to have grown organically rather than having been built.
To your left is the kitchen with a table for five, a sofa and an open fireplace. The kitchen area is not large but has all that is necessary. Already you will be noticing how thick the walls are keeping the inside of the house cool even in summer.
To the right takes you into a corridor space and a second Sterna, this corridor goes all the way through another large solid wooden door to the bathroom with shower and your private garden. The gentle and unimposing owner of the house, who lives upstairs, will ask entrance through this corridor to the garden once a day to water the trees for you. This is the only part of your house she will need access to.
Halfway along the corridor to the bathroom is a small door tucked into the thick walls. This door opens into the main, open, living spaces.
The house has high and grand hardwood beamed and lathed ceilings on top of which sit a meter of soil designed to keep the heat in in winter and the heat out in summer. This traditional way of builing the ceilings along with the meter thick stone walls was a design of the times, for those who had the means, so as not to need additional heating or cooling. Consequently none of the rooms have fireplaces, except for the kitchen, and even now none need air-conditioning in the summer.
The sitting room has seating for five or more, with one of the sofas being a day bed that can accomodate a fifth person for sleeping.
This room has the curiosity of being embelished with an old traditional weaving loom. It is strung and complete and provides a curious talking point. There are many bits and pieces around the house collected over time and many things to discover. This room has double doors into the spacious garden.
The dining room is where the Admiral entertained. There is a large dining table with seating for 6 and extra carvers for guests if necessary. Light fills this room and there is a long high backed sofa down one wall. A pleasant spot to read a good book in the quiet and elegance of this lovely room.
The master bedroom is bright and clean and simple, the original cupboards remain and there is a very peaceful feeling in the room. The double bedroom is a mirror of the master bedroom, again with the original features still present.
Outside, and discretely at the back of the house, there is a good sized garden at your diposal with oranges, pomegranetes, and a variety of other trees. Seating is built in to a low wall and your only companions in this green oasis are the three resident tortoises, and the occasional cat.
In all this is a house to fall in love with. Although is retains so much grandeur of days gone by it could not be called, by todays standards, luxury. The furniture is old, the embelishments are curiosities, but the over all effect is absolutley charming and it will give you a holiday you will cherish and talk about for the years to come.
It is a place for those who appreciate tradition and style, and who want to unwind from the pace and pressures of modern life.
The house is medium distance to the sea and the harbour, and close to the Four Corners super market.
