Hydra Homes - Beautiful homes for sale on the Greek island of Hydra

'Beautiful Homes for sale
  on the Greek island of
    Hydra...'

This is a delightful, quirky typical Hydra house in the middle of Kamini. With a large 'hidden' walled garden. One enters the property through traditional double doors from the street, and is immediately taken aback at the size of the garden. On two levels, and mostly paved in large flagstones, this is a cool, tranquil and unexpected space where you will want to spend much of your time! The lower part of the garden is a natural extension of the house, where dinner is served under the bougainvillea and evening fades into night... From here, three stone steps lead up to the larger part of the garden which is planted with mature trees (an olive tree of around 200 years dates the house), vines and shrubs. This is a place for children to play, or to relax in the hammock. Inside the house is a delightfully illogical mixture that somehow works, in true Hydra fashion! The kitchen is small, and reminiscent of a ships galley. The fridge though is a large American style one. The downstairs living room is long, giving the feeling of an old hall, with exposed roof beams and a stone well head at one end giving access to the cistern. The cistern runs the length of the house, under the stone flags, and keeps the ground floor cool in the summer. Turning a corner at the end of the living room leads to a library / study area with internal stairs leading to the first floor. originally there would have been just a ladder up through a trap door, but the upper floor above the study has been removed to give a double height area with a great sense of space. On the first floor is a landing which is currently used as a computer station and for storage, and which leads to the master bedroom. There is a second room (accessed via the master bedroom or from separate external stairs) which can be used as a bedroom. The end of this room has been partitioned off to create an inside bathroom. The original outside bathroom is still there, and has been renovated, and features a full length bath and space for the washing machine. The house is located in Kamini village, a moderate climb up from the port, and is a short walk from the Four Corners supermarket. There are some lovely original features such as an old marble sink, and a curious store-room which looks like it could originally have been a bread oven. The original floorboards upstairs are worn with age, and the exposed roof beams show the marks of the carpenters hand tools. The main attraction is of course the garden, which is of a very good size for a property in this location. The house has three separate hot water tanks, one for the kitchen and one for each of the bathrooms, and a water filter which is useful in prolonging the life of the immersion heaters elements. Upstairs is air conditioned. The house is being sold furnished, including all electrical appliances (fridge, cooker) in the kitchen. The roof was replaced 10 years ago, and so will be serviceable for a long time to come.
